The holidays are usually a time of joy and a time of family celebrations. However, it can bring about mixed feelings and emotions! The holidays can be quite exciting, exhilarating as well as quite challenging. During the holidays, maintaining boundaries with families can be healthy, constructive and less stressful. It is common to regress to being a child in the family. However, setting parameters and anticipating stressful triggers can relieve the anxiety and tension. It can be helpful to set up boundaries and be prepared prior to getting together with family and friends for the holidays. I believe being in control, and having the ability to say “no” can help with self-respect, self-esteem, and the ability to enjoy the holidays!
